Be proactive in making your home and property unattractive to thieves. Below are tips you can implement in your own home and neighborhood to deter theft:

Protect Your Home When You’re Gone:

  • Sign up for vacation or out of town home checks at City Hall
  • Make your home look occupied; set timers on lights and ask a neighbor to collect mail/flyers
  • Lock your garage door and disconnect automatic opener

Protect Your Home:

  • Install a security system
  • Install a smart doorbell
  • Install motion sensor lighting around your home, especially at entrances
  • Attach window locks

Don’t Tempt a Thief

  • Stow expensive items like grills, cars and bikes in the garage
  • Keep your yard free of toys, tools and ladders
  • Prune trees around two-story houses
  • Keep fences, gates and garage doors locked
  • Don't label your personal keys or hide spares outside 

Stay Connected

  • Make connections in the community; look out for your neighbors and stay in communication
  • Form/join your local Neighborhood Watch

Protect Your Car and Valuables

  • Do not leave valuables in plain view
  • Close all windows and sunroof 
  • Always lock your car
